BIG TICK' FOR NORTHERN RAIL
6th June 2007
Northern Rail has been awarded a coveted ‘Big Tick’ at the Business in the Community’s Awards for Excellence 2007 for demonstrating the positive impact its responsible business activities have in rural areas.
Northern Rail was honoured in the Northern Foods Rural Action Award category (supported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) for its work in supporting rural regeneration through Community Rail Partnerships.
Northern Rail has a growing network of Community Rail Partnerships on most of its rural routes across the North. These partnerships bring together Northern with local partners in the business community, voluntary sector and local authorities with the
shared aim of providing better rail services, promoting sustainable access into rural areas and assisting in rural regeneration.
Presenting the award to Northern Rail, BBC business news presenter Declan Curry said: “Northern Rail has made a significant contribution to rural regeneration with a collaborative effort across the region, important for both tourists and residents of rural
areas.”
Heidi Mottram, Managing Director Northern Rail said: “We are delighted to have been recognised with the highly prestigious ‘Big Tick’ for our work within the community and to have the opportunity to be able to demonstrate the positive impact this has had on rural areas.
“As a responsible company we take our duty to the communities in which we work very seriously. The initiatives recognised today are just part of Northern Rail’s on- going commitment to working responsibly and our community engagement programme builds on the partnership approach our parent organisations Serco- NedRailways have brought to the franchise.”
Northern Rail is one of only four companies to be shortlisted for the ‘National Example of Excellence’ in the Community’s Big tick Awards in the Rural Action category. The results of the national awards will be announced at a gala dinner, to be held on Monday 2 July in London.
Now in their tenth year, Business in the Community’s Awards for Excellence are the UK’s leading awards for responsible business practice and recognise companies that are integrating responsible business practice into their main operations.
