12th April 2007

The bets are on as Saturday’s Grand National draws closer and here are Northern Rail and Merseyrail’s tips for a hassle free journey:

If you are travelling from or via Manchester:
Passengers are advised to travel from Piccadilly or Oxford Road stations via Warrington.  Northern Rail will operate two local services every hour most of which will have extra carriages.  Other operators will also provide two fast services per hour on this route (with additional services from Liverpool in the evening).  Rail services between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool via Newton le Willows will be replaced by buses. Passengers can make connections at Liverpool for Merseyrail Electrics services from Liverpool Central to Aintree, which depart every 7.5 minutes.

If you are travelling from Wigan:
There will be additional trains between Wigan and Kirkby giving a half hourly frequency during the morning (into Kirkby) and the evening (from Kirkby).  The last train from Kirkby to Wigan in the evening will be at 19.40.  Passengers can make connections at Kirkby for Merseyrail Electrics services to Liverpool and Aintree. A bus service will also operate between Kirkby and Aintree.  There are no rail services from Wigan North Western to Liverpool via St Helens where buses will replace trains.

If you are travelling from Warrington:
A normal train service (four trains per hour) will operate between Warrington Central and Liverpool.  Passengers can make connections at Liverpool for Merseyrail Electrics services from Liverpool Central to Aintree, which depart every 7.5 minutes.
There are no trains from Warrington Bank Quay to Liverpool via Huyton.

f you are travelling from Manchester Airport:
Passengers are advised to change trains at Manchester Piccadilly or Oxford Road Stations and then make connections at Liverpool for Merseyrail Electrics services from Liverpool Central to Aintree, which depart every 7.5 minutes.

If you are travelling from or via Preston:
A normal train service will operate between Preston and Ormskirk with additional carriages.  Passengers can make connections at Ormskirk for Merseyrail Electrics services to Aintree.

If you are travelling on City Line services between Wigan and Liverpool via St Helens and Manchester Victoria and Liverpool via Newton le Willows:
Buses will replace rail services and passengers should allow more time for their journey. Passengers can make connections at Liverpool for Merseyrail Electrics services from Liverpool Central to Aintree, which depart every 7.5 minutes.

Where Northern Rail is operating replacement bus services full details are shown on posters displayed at all affected stations.  These alterations are due to modernisation of signalling equipment in the Huyton and Rainhill areas, which is taking place over seven weekends.  Northern Rail apologises to any passengers who may be inconvenienced by these arrangements.
