Robbie Paul, Salford City Reds' international capture, helped to set the latest set of aspiring British Rugby League stars on their way to glory by making the draw for the Northern Rail BARLA National Youth Cups U14, U16 and U18 competition.
New Zealand Test ace Paul, one of the most recognisable figures in British Rugby League, played for Bradford Bulls and Huddersfield Giants before joining the Reds in time for the 2008 Northern Rail Cup campaign.
BARLA Youth & Junior Chair Carole Land said: “We would like to thank Robbie Paul and his club for agreeing to make the draw.
“We have had a record entry and for the eventual winners of each age group, the sides will be able to say that they are the best in the country.
“We would like to thank our sponsors Northern Rail and we are looking to build on last year’s competition and finals day.
“The standard of rugby league at this level gets better and better and the coaches who give up their own time and the players are to be congratulated for the goods they produce on the field.
“We are anticipating another bumper Bank Holiday Monday crowd on May 5 for the climax of the competition at The John Charles Stadium, home of the Hunslet Hawks.”
Heidi Mottram, Managing Director, Northern Rail said: "We're delighted to be supporting the BARLA National Youth Cups for the second year.
“Our partnership with the Rugby Football League and sponsorship of the Northern Rail Cup has secured Sportsmatch funding for grass roots development and by growing the game at this level it helps to keep a stream of talent flowing into senior clubs.
"Last year's competition showcased some tremendous young players and we'd like to wish all those taking part this year the very best of luck in what is sure to be another exciting competition."
