Middlesbrough
The Dorman Museum has vast collections ranging from local finds to artefacts from around the world, and Ormesby Hall is an exquisite 18th century mansion with Georgian stables that are home to the horses of the Cleveland Mounted Police and a permanent model railway exhibition. Captain Cook Birthplace Museum tells of his life and voyages, with displays including a reconstructed deck of the Endeavour. It is located in Stewart Park, which also has lakes and a children’s zoo. And you just can’t miss the Transporter Bridge - the largest working bridge of its kind in the world.

Sunderland
The Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art showcases international new work, and Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens tells the town’s story and more, with paintings by Lowry, Victorian masterpieces and a spectacular display of over 1500 flowers and plants. Other sparkling attractions are the National Glass Centre, Sunderland AFC’s Stadium of Light.

Whitby
Tall ships regularly moor in Whitby and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum occupies the harbourside house where James Cook came to serve his apprenticeship in 1746. Up the 199 steps to the Abbey, its visitor centre has artefacts excavated at Whitby, as well technology allowing you meet some of the town’s former residents, including Dracula author, Bram Stoker. On many days throughout the year, steam trains leave Whitby station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the Esk Valley Line.

Darlington
At Piercebridge are the remains of the Roman fort of Morbium, built around AD270. More recent history can be enjoyed at the Darlington Railway Centre and Museum, whose engines include Locomotion No1, which pulled the first train on the Stockton to Darlington Railway of 1825.

The International Heritage City of Durham
Home to the World Heritage site of Durham Cathedral and Castle, with the Cathedral being one of the most impressive buildings in England. The Durham Regatta, summer festivals, agricultural shows and steam rallies mean there's something for everyone.
